Abigail’s thirty-first adventure.

Abigail the Church mouse yawned very slowly and happily and woke to see the light streaming into her room. She looked around and saw that it was morning. She felt really warm and relaxed and not feeling at all ready to get up.

"I don't know why, but I was really tired," she thought to herself. "I feel better for a good sleep".

From where she lay she could just see the picture of her Great-Uncle Chilblain. If she pulled one of the sheets over her eyes he seemed to go all fuzzy. Abigail pulled the sheet forward and back for a bit watching the picture. Then she closed her eyes again and dozed. Time passed. Even she wouldn't have been able to tell you how long. Whatever, all too soon there was a loud 'rat-a-tat-tat' on the door.

"Go away" mumbled Abigail.

The door opened and her cousin Hephsiba walked in.

"Abigail? You’re not STILL asleep, are you?” said Hephsiba, quite shocked. “I wanted to talk to you!”

"I'm trying to be asleep," said Abi.

"But you are a Church mouse!" said Hephsiba. "You shouldn't be sleeping all day! There are lots and lots of things to do!"

"Hmmm" said Abigail.

Hephsiba somehow managed to look sad and angry and disappointed all at the same time. "Being lazy is a very bad thing," she said at last.

"It's just as well I don't NEED to be good then," said Abi.

"As a Church mouse you are supposed to set an example," said Hephsiba.

"I may be a Church mouse, but I still get tired," said Abi, "and the best thing to do when you are tired is to sleep".

"I'm all in favour of that," said Snuffles the hedgehog, who had walked in while they were talking.

Hephsiba walked over and took hold of Snuffles. "You remember Great-Uncle Chilblain, don't you Snuffles?" she asked, pointing at the big painting.

Snuffles snuffed loudly in the direction of the picture. "Oh, yes" she replied. "I knew Chilblain. A fine figure of a Church mouse he was. Very proper and organised".

"There, you see!" said Hephsiba to Abi. "He wouldn't be lying in bed all day! He was always trying to be a GOOD Church mouse!"

Abigail looked at the picture of Great-Uncle Chilblain again, and this time instead of fuzzy her Great-Uncle looked very dark and stern. "Alright", she said at last. "I suppose you can't sleep all the time".

"Mind you," continued the hedgehog as Abigail got dressed. "I seem to remember Chilblain worked so long and hard one Christmas that he went to sleep during the nativity play and fell into the baptistry".

Both mice stared at Snuffles.

"Did he get all wet?" asked Hephsiba.

"No, it was empty at the time," said Snuffles. "He nearly knocked himself out".

Hephshiba looked quite shocked. Abigail just managed not to laugh. It was after all, a very bad thing that had happened to her Great-Uncle.

"What happened?" said Hephsiba at last.

"Zzzzzz" said Snuffles, who had actually fallen asleep while standing up and talking to them.

"Now THAT is lazy!" said Abi, and Hephsiba nodded her head slowly in agreement.
